Pilling (also referred to as “bobbling”) consists of small fibres that are formed on the fabric surface. The fabric still works as it should, but pilling can prematurely age and dull outdoor cushions to an unattractive finish. For new Fabric for outdoor furniture, contact https://extex.co.uk/
Why pilling happens
Pilling is caused by friction. Loose fibres work their way to the surface and become entangled into little knots as people sit, move, or rub against cushions. With softer fabric and even some synthetic materials, the pilling can be more pronounced. It can further be agitated by:
Highly used seating (family use, rentals, hospitality)
Rough parts on clothing, like Velcro and zips
Abrasive cleaning with stiff brushes, for example
Cushions in contact with furniture frames made of textured wood
Outdoor fabrics are made to be resistant to UV and moisture, but they are not pill-proof by default.
How to reduce pilling:
Select an appropriate fabric for what the furniture will be used for: ask about abrasion resistance and opt for tighter weaves in heavily used areas.
Put them in places where they aren’t rubbing all the time: get ties, non-slip mats, or change cushions so that edges are not scraping frames.
Cleaning – rinse grit off first and then use mild soap with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh scrubbing.
Don’t be tempted to pull on pilled areas, as this can damage the threads of the fabric.
Rotate cushions: changing the sides helps distribute wear better.
Early on, a bit of pilling is normal, but with good fabric choices and gentle care, they’ll stay looking smart for longer.
